Victoria Shamrocks Announce New Head Coach
Press Release:
The Victoria Shamrocks of the Western Lacrosse Association are very pleased to announce that Bob Heyes has been appointed as their new head coach. For the past two seasons, Heyes has served as an assistant coach under Walt Christianson. Last month, the Shamrocks announced that Christianson had decided to step down and that the search was on for a new head coach.
“We had some strong candidates step forward to express interest in the position,” said Shamrocks general manager Chris Welch. “At the end of the day, Bob Heyes stood out as the best man for the job. He brings incredible dedication, commitment and passion, and he certainly bleeds Shamrock green.”
Heyes has a long history with the Shamrocks and lacrosse in Victoria. He was a Minto Cup champion and MVP with the Esquimalt Legion in 1988 and a Mann Cup champion with the Shamrocks in 1997 and 1999. He maintains the distinction of being the last WLA goaltender to register a shut-out.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge and my goal is to bring a Mann Cup championship back to Victoria,” said Heyes.
“I think he’s ready for the challenge,” said Welch. “He’s earned respect and been successful every step of the way so far and I’m confident he’ll do a great job with this opportunity.”
The Shamrocks expect to have an announcement regarding the remainder of the coaching staff soon.
