Victoria Shamrocks Announce Christianson Stepping Down
The Victoria Shamrocks of the Western Lacrosse Association announce that head coach Walt Christianson is stepping down. “When Walt agreed to come back in 2010, it was on the understanding that he would do it for two years and then we’d re-evaluate,” said Shamrocks general manager Chris Welch. “He’s made his decision and I both understand and respect his reasons. On behalf of the Shamrocks I want to express to Walt and his family our appreciation and gratitude for the outstanding contributions he’s made to the team.”
The Shamrocks have enjoyed some of their greatest success with Christianson at the helm. Between 2002 and 2006, he led the team to a remarkable five straight appearances in the Mann Cup finals and two championships in 2003 and 2005. Following a two-year absence, Christianson returned to the head coach position in 2010 and led the team to consecutive second-place finishes in the WLA. Playoff success proved to be somewhat more elusive this time around as the team reached the league finals in 2010 and then lost in the first round of the playoffs earlier this year.
Regarding the search to find a replacement, Welch said, “Our goal is to have the position filled before Christmas but we’ll have more to say about that at a later date.”
Statement from Walt Christianson:
“It has been my privilege to be a part of the Shamrock organization as a player and a coach for 22 years and I am so grateful for all of the experiences, friends and memories that I have made during this time. I won't say with absolute certainty that I am entering into a permanent retirement from coaching because coaching and lacrosse have been a part of my life for 35 years and we never know what the future holds. But this spring will be my youngest son's last year of minor lacrosse and it’s time for me to be a dad just enjoying the game from the seats. My family has been very supportive of me and my coaching over the years and I am looking forward to having more time with them and for some of the activities that I enjoy as well.
“I want to thank the players for their trust, commitment and friendship that has inspired me over the years as well as the fans for their unwavering support. I also can't thank Chris Welch, Doug Jones and Jim Hartshorne enough for having the confidence in my ability to lead the team for over ten years of coaching. What an amazing ride it has been. I look forward to seeing everyone from the other side of the glass next spring.”
